
Anthony Okely is a Distinguished Professor of Public Health and NHMRC Leadership Fellow in at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He is also an Adjunct Professorship at Western Norway University. He is co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Children’s Food, Nutrition and Physical Activity.
His research focuses on movement behaviours (physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep) in children, with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries.
Anthony has led teams that developed national 24-hr Movement Guidelines in Australia and provided mentorship for similar guidelines in South Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. He has consulted for WHO, UNICEF and the World Bank on a number of projects related to children’s physical activity.
He currently leads an international study of movement behaviours in the early years called SUNRISE, which involves 65 countries, 48 of which are low- or middle-income.
He has published over 400 peer-reviewed journal articles which have been cited over 40,000 times. He has a h-index of 96. He has been a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher since 2021.
